Questions:

  • Every year there are fatal accidents at our beaches. How can we provide more protection for swimmers? Life guards in more places and for longer times, life belts, penalties for ignoring danger warnings?
  • Many beaches suffer from littering. How do we stop it? More litter bins, litter wardens, picnic tables.

The EU has rules on water quality that enable members of the public to find out the water quality of any beach they may wish to visit in the EU.

At the Zoo

Group discussion. Are zoos a good thing? Why do we have them? Isn’t it cruel to keep animals, birds etc in captivity? Are there animals that should not be kept in zoos?

What other ways are there to protect endangered species? Banning trade (CITES), habitat protection (stronger efforts to deter poachers, controls on logging, hunting, use of pesticides). Should circuses that use captive animals be banned?

The EU has adopted minimum standards for keeping animals in zoos and supports the role of zoos in preserving species.
