Migrant routes

In 2015 as the numbers of migrants arriving in different countries around Europe soared through the summer it became clear that this was a situation on a scale not seen since WW11. Local and national authorities are facing major challenges to respond to the needs of so many people on the move, in need of water, food and shelter. At various frontiers, in capital cities and around railway stations there have been scenes of chaos, anger and despair.

UN figures show 300 000 have risked their lives crossing the Mediterranean since January.

By early August over 2 000 had drowned (IOM) (In 2014 3,279). In July alone 107,500 migrants arrived in Europe.
