Danes often prefer cycling. There are said to be more bicycles on the streets of the capital than cars. The first bicycle lane was established in Copenhagen in around 1920 and today the city has a network of bicycle lanes totalling 350 km.


Cuisine  Food in Denmark is traditionally based on local agriculture and fisheries, and therefore features mainly meat and fish.
Smørrebrød - open sandwiches
Frokost  - literally breakfast, but usually meaning lunch. A main meal can have fish such as pickled herring, smoked eel or hot fried, breaded plaice.
Rødgrød - a pudding based on sago, semolina or potato, strongly flavoured with redcurrant or summer berries such as blackcurrant, raspberries, blackberries, bilberries or black cherries.  The phrase "Rødgrød med fløde" (rødgrød with cream) is thought by Danes to be unpronounceable by anybody other than themselves.

Drinks *  lager beer - famous brewers have been Carlsberg and Tuborg.
*  akvavit - (aquavit) a spirit distilled from either grain or potatoes, like vodka, typically flavoured with caraway.  The Danish distillery Aalborg makes an akvavit distilled with amber.
