Life expectancy at birth. 72.3 years (male), 79.6 (female) (WHO 2011)

Ethnic groups: Slovak 85.8%, Hungarian 9.7%, Roma 1.7% (probably significantly higher, as much as 7%, but social pressure prevents many Roma from agreeing to be ethnically labelled), Ruthenian/Ukrainian 1% (2001 census). It is interesting that United States census figures in 1990 reckoned that 1.8 million Americans were of Slovak descent.

Language – Slovak and Hungarian

Religion: Roman Catholic 69%, Lutheran 7%, Greek Catholic 4%, Calvinist 2%, Orthodox 1%.  Of the pre-WW2 Jewish population of 90,000 only 2,300 remain.
