Masterpieces of art can be seen from the late Middle Ages. A significant figure from this period was the sculptor Majster Pavol of Levoča, with fine woodcarvings of church altar pieces. Wood carving remains a traditional art form, varying from historical figures to complete folk nativity scenes, as found in Rajecká Lesná.

Some ancient wooden churches have survived.  This is a 15th century painting of St George and the Dragon on panelling inside the wooden church at Hervatov.

The best known historic Slovak hero is Juraj Jánošík (the Slovak equivalent of Robin Hood). He led a resistance band in the mountains, harrassing the Austro-Hungarian occupiers. He is the subject of much storytelling and folk art.

Literature – The central Slovak dialect is said to be the purest form of the Slavic language. Literary Slovak was codified from the late 18th century by Anton Bernolák and in the mid 19th century by Ludovít Štúr.
