Current Government: Head of State: King Felipe VI (from 19 June 2014)
President of the Government (the post is equivalent to Prime Minister):   Pedro Sanchez Perez-Castejon (since January 2020) in coalition with the radical left Podemus party.
Constitution: parliamentary government under a constitutional hereditary monarchy.
Bicameral parliament, the Cortes Generales, consisting of the Congress of Deputies with 350 members elected by proportional representation, and the Senate with 259 members, of whom 208 are elected by popular vote.
Spain returned to democracy on the death of General Francisco Franco in 1975. He had been nationalist ruler of Spain since 1938.
Joined the EU in January 1986. Number of MEPs: 54.
Spain is a member of NATO.
