Population - 65.95 million (metropolitan France, estimate at July 2013), including more than 5 million of Arab and African descent, reflecting the make up of the former French empire and recent migration.  A further 2.69 million live in the French overseas departments and territories.
Life expectancy: 78.5 years – men, 84.8 years - women.

Language – French is the sole official language since 1992. Many regional languages also spoken.

Religion – France is a secular country; freedom of religion is a constitutional right but the government does not keep statistics on religious adherence (or on ethnic origins).
Non-government statistics estimate: Roman Catholic 85%, Muslim 8%, Protestant 2%, Jewish 1%, none 4%
