Geography

Area of 93,028 square km.

Bordering countries are Austria, Slovakia, Ukraine, Romania, Serbia, Croatia, Slovenia.

Largest cities – Budapest (capital - 1.7 million), Debrecen, Miskolc, Szeged, Pécs, Győr.

Main rivers: Duna (Danube) and Tisza flow north to south and divide the country into three regions.  Lake Balaton is the largest freshwater lake in central Europe.

Terrain: mainly flat plains with ranges of hills; mountains up to 1000 m on the  border with Slovakia. Highest point Kékestető is 1014 m. Nagy Alföld (Great Hungarian Plain) lies in the south-east, famed for fertile agriculture.
