Constitution:  The world's only remaining sovereign Grand Duchy.
Parliamentary democracy headed by a hereditary monarch. Characterised by stable government with long serving ministers. Executive power exercised by the Grand Duke and cabinet of ministers. The ministers are recommended by the Prime Minister and appointed by the Grand Duke.
Unicameral legislature – the Chamber of Deputies: 60 members directly elected by popular vote for a 5 year term, from 4 constituencies.
Council of State – 21 citizens appointed by the Grand Duke advises the Chamber of Deputies.
A constitutional reform in 2008 removed the need for laws to be approved by the monarch.
