Constitution:  Portugal is a democratic republic. The head of state is the President who is non executive, elected for a five year term by universal suffrage. The chief executive is the Prime Minister, appointed by the President and who governs through a Council of Ministers.
There is a unicameral parliament, called the Assembly of the Republic, with 230 deputies elected by a system of proportional representation for a four year term.

Portugal is a founder member of NATO and the OECD.
Joined the EU in January 1986.
