Key facts
*  Currency: the €uro since 2007 - Slovenia was the first member state in the May 2004 enlargement to adopt the single currency

*  Unemployment: 9.1% (Aug 2020)

General: Slovenia has a well educated and productive workforce, with vigorous political and economic institutions.  A large part of the economy remains in state hands, a legacy of Communist rule when part of the former Yugoslavia. But in the early 2000s the banking, telecommunications and utility sectors were privatised.

Trade: Two-thirds of trade is with the EU especially Germany 18.9%, Italy 10.7%, Austria 7.4%, Croatia 7.1% (2017 data).
